Warriors' Top-Order Fireworks Prove Too Hot Despite Van Staden's Century
Match summary
A blistering 278/7 built on explosive fifties from Wanigasekara, Rathambalage and Private player proved enough as Warriors held off GUCC by 53 runs despite a brilliant retired century from Michael Van Staden.
Match report
Sri Lankan Warriors produced a batting masterclass to post a massive 278/7 before defending the total against a spirited GUCC side who were led by Michael Van Staden's magnificent century.
The Warriors top order was in sensational form from the first ball. Gayan Rathambalage (54 off 31) and Private player (63 off 38) took the attack to GUCC with explosive hitting - Rathambalage hammering 11 fours while Private player added 6 fours and 4 sixes in a devastating opening assault.
Amal Wanigasekara then anchored the innings with a composed 65 off 62 balls, his knock featuring 6 fours and a six. With Chamika Thalakada (33) and captain Keerthi Bandara (24*) adding valuable runs lower down, Warriors reached an imposing 278/7 from their 35 overs.
GUCC needed a special effort in reply, and Michael Van Staden delivered just that. The opener played one of the innings of the season, scoring a brilliant 101 off 83 balls with 9 fours and a six before retiring. His was a lone hand of class.
Fill-in provided brief entertainment with a rapid 25 (3 sixes), and Michael Blackwell made 28, but the required rate proved too steep. Kasun Fernando claimed 2/29 and Chamika Thalakada added 1/30 as GUCC finished on 225/4 - a brave effort but 53 runs short.
A comprehensive win for Warriors that showcased their batting depth and ability to post match-winning totals.
